Shaparak Shajarizadeh was one of the Girls of Revolution Street.

Girls of Revolution Street / Enghelab Street (Persian: دختران خیابان انقلاب) is a series of protests against the compulsory Hijab in Iran. The protests were inspired by Vida Movahed (Persian: ویدا موحد‎), an Iranian woman known as the Girl of Revolution Street (Persian: دختر خیابان انقلاب‎), who stood on an utility box on Enghelab Street (Revolution Street) in Tehran on 27 December 2017, tied her Hijab, a white headscarf, to a stick, and waved it to the crowd as a flag.

Shaparak Shajarizadeh (Persian شاپرک شجری زاده), one of the Girls of Revolution Street, recently named by the BBC as one of the 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2018, is part of a growing wave of activists pushing back against Iran's compulsory hijab law and participating in protest campaigns known online as #WhiteWednesdays and #TheGirlsofRevolutionStreet. www.OpenCanada.Org

Shaparak was arrested three times for removing her headscarf in public, and jailed in both Shahr-e Rey and Evin prisons. Shajarizadeh fled to Turkey where she was later reunited with her son. While there, she learned she had been sentenced to two years in prison and 18 years probation in her home country. She and her son are now living in Toronto and seeking asylum in Canada. Her husband remains in Iran. Her lawyer, prominent human rights advocate Nasrin Sotoudeh, was arrested in June after being charged with several national security offences stemming from her work defending women, including Shajarizadeh, who have been prosecuted for protesting the compulsory hijab. Sotoudeh is currently being held in Evin prison. www.OpenCanada.Org

Nasrin Sotoudeh (Persian نسرین ستوده) www.NasrinSotoudeh.com, the Iranian Human-Rights lawyer defending Iranian girls peacefully protesting Iran's compulsory hijab law, was thrown in the notorious Evin prison; so were the Girls of The Revolution Street; so was the lawyer of their lawyer!

"We want Canada to stand in solidarity with human rights defenders and target those who violate human rights. We also want women politicians from other countries not to obey compulsory hijab while visiting Iran. Iranian women are fighting for their lives. They put their lives at risk with our protests. If women politicians claim to be feminists, don't stand with a government that oppresses women. Stand with us. We need support from all over the world to end injustice in Iran," says Shaparak. www.OpenCanada.Org

Forty five members of the European Parliament call on EU Foreign Policy Chief, Federica Mogherini, on 28 February 2018 to support the Iranian Women's Anti-Compulsory-Hijab Protests. Girls Of Revolution Street
